Digestive cancer is increasingly common and clinically critical. In contrast to other types of cancers, most digestive cancers can be prevented and cured, and early detection and treatment of precancerous or early cancerous lesions can induce favorable treatment outcomes. So, in the era of digestive cancer, the role of gastroenterologists is very crucial and not limited to early diagnosis. Not only tissue sampling via endoscopic procedures, but the decision making of endoscopic resection, surgery, and insertion of stents are made by experienced digestive physicians. In recent years, cancer treatment decisions are often made through a multidisciplinary approach. I have a very high opinion of the capacity of gastroenterologists as captains of this multidisciplinary team. The Korean Society of Gastrointestinal Cancer was founded and is being developed in order to do our best while responding to the rapidly changing paradigm of cancer treatment. Through many academic events, we have tried to act in the capacity of a medical oncologist as well as gastroenterologist. We have held numerous symposia on a variety of topics about cancer from basic research to up-to-date clinical research. Through the Young Leader’s Camp, we have sought to train the next generation of young gastrointestinal oncologists. Since the first meeting of our society in 2006, we have developed and made great improvements. Our members have the capacities of early diagnosis, endoscopic resection, endoscopic palliative therapy, and chemotherapy. I am hopeful that all members will take a great interest in the development of a society that is doing its best for patients that are suffering and to advance the academic field of gastrointestinal cancer.
